Bench Power Supply
Bench
power supply is a term which is often used to refer
to a benchtop power supply which offers a fully variable
output with regards to voltage and current. They are
often referred to as variable power supplies, laboratory
power supplies or simply lab power supplies.
A
bench power supply can have a wide range of uses, they
are often used in laboratory or test situations where
a wide range of powers, voltages and currents are required.
This allows for flexibility and can be very cost effective
over buying a fixed voltage power supply for each and
every test situation.
Other situations where a bench power supply can be
used are situations where the exact voltage is not know,
for example when there is a long cable with a significant
volt drop along it’s length, a variable bench
power supply can be used to ensure the correct voltage
at the end of the cable is achieved.
Electrolysis and electro-plating applications also
often require a bench power supply, here the voltage
is often quite high, with just enough current to drive
the voltage through the electrolyte solution. Because
the power supply is fully variable it means which with
each new solution, effluent or plating application can
be set to the required voltage and current.
Simplypowersupplies.com have a wide range of bench
power supplies available, with power ratings from 100W
to 32kW; voltages up to 1000Vdc and currents up to 600A.
They are not only available as benchtop power supplies
but also in 19” rack mount format.
Various control options exist for bench power supplies
including GPIB; RS232; Analogue Interface; IEEE; CAN
Bus and with LabView drivers. This makes these variable
power supplies very controllable and useful in a very
wide range of applications, especially test situations
where repetition of certain values is required, or integration
with other processes is an advantage.
