DC to DC Power Supplies

DC to DC Power Supplies (often referred to as a DC/DC Converter) are devices which convert one DC voltage into another DC voltage at a defined power level. In many applications particularly where battery backup is required, DC is used to facilitate bumpless transfer to battery power should the mains power fail. The battery pack is sized to suit the level of backup required dependant on the Autonomy and the current required by the load. The voltage of the battery pack may or may not be compatible with the devices needing to be powered so DC to DC Power Supplies (or DC/DC Converter) will be used to convert the voltage to that required by the load.

DC to DC Power Supplies are used for a variety of different applications which include:-

DC to DC Power Supplies1. Where conversion is required from one dc voltage to another. e.g. a distributed DC power bus may run from 108Vdc batteries to give a high degree of backup, but the equipment to be installed for monitoring or controlling processes runs on 24Vdc. In this case DC to DC power supplies are used to change the voltage from 108Vdc down to 24Vdc.

2. Where batteries are used to power equipment which cannot cope with the voltage fluctuations caused by the state of charge or discharge of the battery . In this case DC to DC power supplies are used to stabilise the battery supply, so whilst a 24Vdc battery might fluctuate by as much as ± 20%, the DC/DC converter will cope with a ±30% swing at its input and provide a stable output to within a fraction of 1%

3. On vehicle applications DC to DC Power Supplies will be used to protect electronic devices from transients caused by engine starting, particularly where the DC/DC Converter is a galvanically isolated type.

4. Where renewable energy sources such as fuel cells provide an output where the voltage fluctuates dependant upon the size of the load, DC to DC Power Supplies can be used to stabilise the energy source output by absorbing the voltage fluctuations.

5. Where large cables carrying significant currents over long distances are used in installations, volt drop along the cable length can often be a problem. In these applications DC to DC Power Supplies can be used to restore the voltage to it's nominal value

Simplypowersupplies.com are specialists in DC Power Conversion. In addition to our own UK manufactured products, we also supply products made in Germany, and the Far East where necessary. We have many standard DC to DC Power Supplies but in addition to these we can also provide DC/DC Converters with special output voltages, or configure systems which consist of multiple units connected in parallel to give higher power (up to 250kW), or we can provide rack based products with hot swap facility to give n+1 redundancy for critical applications. Our DC/DC Converters cover 5Vdc, 12Vdc, 24Vdc, 48Vdc, 60Vdc, 72Vdc, 96Vdc, 108Vdc, 110Vdc, 125Vdc, 216Vdc, 220Vdc, and 250Vdc nominal voltages, so simply ask if you can't find what you are looking fro on our website.

For the rail industry we also provide units with Deutsche Bahn approval and complying with European rail standards such as EN50155 and ENV50121.
